Book Review of Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell

Nineteen Eighty Four (sometimes written as 1984), by George Orwell, is a novel concerning human misery due to the totalitarian regime of the Party which rules over the Oceanian province of Airstrip One. The world as it stands is in a state of perennial war, or this is what government makes people believe. The pervasive government surveillance, controlling public mind, and the voiding of citizens’ rights is what happens throughout the book. In the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue), protagonist Winston Smith is a civil servant responsible for upholding the Party’s propaganda by revising historical records to render the party omniscient and always correct. Still, his meager existence disillusions him to rebel against the Big Brother, a face shown by the party as the leader, which leads to his arrest, torture and conversion.
