Product Description

BlackBerry Torch 9800

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the first handset to ship running theBlackBerry 6 OS, its also the first slider phone out of the RIM stable, combining a QWERTY keypad and a touchscreen into a solid,(fairly) compact chassis. The new OS brings with it some much-needed revamps including a better browser, polished interface and improved multimedia features. The Torch is a mishmash of the Blackberry Storm & Bold and more often than not, manages to stay a notch above both its brethrens.

The front of the device is mostly taken up by the 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen (480 x 360), below which is the familiar BlackBerry call, menu, back, end buttons and optical trackpad . Along the right side of the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rockers, and user-assignable convenience key, while the left side houses the Micro USB jack.

The Torch is RIM's attempt at vanquishing what has been its Achille's heel, the Blackberry Browser, once and for all. Previous versions of the BB Browser were plagued with a functionally limited & often sluggish UI. The Torch hopes to change all that with a new simpler and quicker Blackberry OS 6. It supports a host of new features including tabbed browsing, pinch-to-zoom support, text reflow and enhanced URL sharing. Another major inclusion is the support for HTML5 & CSS3, which basically means lesser load times & improved browser perfomance.

The Torch features a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, 2X zoom, and an LED flash. It's the highest rated megapixels RIM camera ever, but where the camera truly shines is the inclusion of the right tools for taking pictures indoors, additional scene modes, face detection and a generally simplified camera interface. The new camera options, and most of the scene modes do their job fairly well, especially the Party Mode & Sports Mode which lets you capture great snaps in dim, indoor enviorments & fast-moving subjects respectively. It can also record videos at VGA resolutions.

The Torch also comes with an improved Universal Search option which can dig up a search term from mails, messages, library, contacts & pretty much any location on your mobile. It also comes with an improved social networking tool which allows you to aggregate RSS feeds and services like Twitter or Facebook into a single view. Additionally, RIM has managed to cut down on the menu-within- menu navigation which plagued the previous version of the OS, the Torch manages to take you to your destination with the least number of clicks as possible.

The RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 is a quad-band world phone featuring 3G support, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Other phone features include speakerphone, voice-activated dialing, smart dialing, conference calling, speed dial, visual voice mail, and text and multimedia messaging. RIM has coupled the Text and multimedia messages into a single in-box and supports threaded chat view, inline addressing and group chat. The mobile also syncs with Microsoft Exchange & IBM Lotus Domino, to offer full-fledged Push Mail support.

With BlackBerry Internet Service, you can access up to 10 personal/business POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts, with both separate and combined in-boxes. There's a setup wizard to help you sync your accounts, and it's usually just a matter of entering your log-in ID and password. The mobile comes preloaded with Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter clients , alongside a new Social Feeds app, which aggregates updates from these sites, as well as instant-messaging clients, into one continous feed. You can pick and choose which sites you want pulled into the feed, and also adjust notification and display settings, besides this, the app doubles up as an RSS feed aggregator. The mobile comes preloaded with a number of useful apps including the DataViz Documents To Go Standard Edition, a memopad and a few games. You can always download more from the BlackBerry App World 2.0.

The previous BlackBerry OS had received its share of flak for a rather uninspiring multimedia UI, it all changes with the Torch, the new BB OS 6 sports a sleek Cover Flow-like interface where you can browse through your library with easy swipe gestures. The video player also renders more playback options, ranging from actual size to full screen.

The mobile supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, FLAC, and OGG audio formats files and MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and WMV video codecs. The best part is you can use the mobile as a mass-storage device and simply drag and drop media files into it. Alternatively, the new BlackBerry Desktop Software 6 can sync your media libraries from Windows Media Player or iTunes, or you could directly download songs over your Wi-Fi network.
